Becoming a Sales Associate

The information contained below is designed to provide a summary of the minimum education, experience, and examination requirements established by the Florida Real Estate Commission. The information provided below can be found on the Commission's website. However, we recommend you contact the Real Estate Commission for more detailed information and for any changes which may have occurred.

Pre License

To be eligible for licensure, one must be at least 18 years of age and hold a high school diploma or its equivalent. Successfully complete a FREC-approved pre-licensing course for sales associates (Course Syllabus) consisting of 63 hours and covering the topics required by the FREC. (Certain college majors eliminate this requirement). This course may be classroom or computer/distance (online) based.

Minimum grade of 70% is required on the end-of-course examination. (If you fail your end-of-course examination, you must wait 30 days from the date of the original examination to retest.)

Once you have successfully completed Course I (or before, if you choose), you must submit to the Florida Division of Real Estate a completed Application, fingerprint card, and appropriate fee. As of July 1, 2006, fingerprinting will be done electronically at various locations.

Once your application is approved and you have successfully passed the course exam, you must then pass the Florida Real Estate Sales Associate examination with a grade of at least 75.

If you have an active license in one of the other States that Florida has a Mutual Recognition Agreement with, you do not have to take the FREC Course 1 but you will have to make application and pass the Florida Real Estate Law Examination with a grade of at least 30.

Submit a completed RE 2050-1 form to activate the license (normally done with/by the broker you will be working with), otherwise the license is issued in an inactive status. If you want to immediately begin working as a sales associate, submit the completed RE 2050-1 form at the examination site.

A general recommendation is to complete and send in your application to the Florida Division of Real Estate as early in this process as possible so that you will have the flexibility to schedule and take your state exam as soon after completion of the course as possible.
